Free Falcon 5.5

The FreeFalcon Team is proud to announce the release of our latest version, FF5.5. This version unites all of our work of the past 14 months and will complete the FreeFalcon 5 series.

Some of the highlights contained in this version are;
a secure installer, freeware high tiles included, elevated terrain for the Korean Theaters, an integrated Season Switcher, new UI and music, full documentation with dynamic links, a separate Cockpit Installer and 3 fully functioning Theaters with 9 dynamic Campaigns.

We have repaired the Campaigns, all of them. There are 3 Theaters; Korea, Korea 2012 and Eurowar. Each Theater contains 3 Campaigns of varying difficulty, weather available and weapons platforms. Your participation and performance will dictate a Win, Loss, or Draw. The Campaigns are designed to last about 12 days and the victory conditions for each are defined in the UI when you select the Campaign. There was little attempt by us to 'rebuild or redesign' these works. We have cleaned them up, matched them to our current data base and flown them. There are still issues with the Korea2012 and Eurowar Campaigns. You may find something that causes a crash or has a problem. We decided to look at these additional 2 Theaters at the last minute and some things we just ran out of time to fix or improve. Some fixes undoubtedly will be in a HotFix. Included are clean, new te_new.tac files. Each Theater includes its own data base and both the data base and .cam files are locked.

The data base in terrdata\objects is unlocked for Theater or Campaign developers. All new Campaigns or Theaters have the ability to use a unique data base, model base and all other required files.

The basic install has 1 default F-16 cockpit, all of our additional cockpits are available in the separate FF5 Cockpit Pack.There is a new A-10, A-7 and others. All of the cockpits have been checked and upgraded.

The Manual has been completed and has active links. It along with the other documents offer a wealth of information. If you fly other planes, the cockpit companion will get you 'type qualified' in no time.

We upgraded a few 3D models, strobe lights, and afterburners, there are some new skins and we fixed some Airbases.

Our data base has been scrubbed, repaired, refined and is in far better condition than in the past. Falcon's relational data base needs clean data to work properly. Over the past several years we have added a great deal of new things. Many of these new additions were not fully integrated or finished when added and this introduced a great deal of instability, and lead to crashes. There are still some areas we want to clean up, but the new stability is easy to see.

There are so many guys that I need to thank for this build. The amount of work that has gone into this release is enormous. To each and everyone of you on the FreeFalco Team, great work, and thanks for your efforts.


The install

This is a one-click-install, you do not need anything else. Our uninstaller is very efficient, be sure and back up any of your files, log book or profiles that you intend to keep. After you install I suggest that you enter Falcon, effect your changes, set up your hardware and then exit.

C# 4.0 is the latest version of the C# programming language, which was released in April 12, 2010. Microsoft has released the 4.0 runtime and development environment Visual Studio 2010. The major focus of C# 4.0 is interoperability with partially or fully dynamically typed languages and frameworks, such as the Dynamic Language Runtime and COM.

Updated 24DEC09: I've received reports of some Antivirus programs calling out a virus in NVGTool.exe. In particular, Trend Micro OfficeScan detects "PAK_Generic.001 in NVGTool.exe."

Any virus alerts are false positives. NVGTool accesses memory registers and intercepts data. This is what allows you to cycle NVGs while zoomed into a MFD. It was built using Game Trainer Studio 1.6, which may trip some antiviruses.

If you choose not to run NVGTool (for those of you who just don't want to take any chances), uncheck the appropriate checkbox on the "Graphics and Application Settings" screen.

Updated 15APR10: Video Playback
The 2.10 installer provides two options for video playback; a 720p High Definition version and a near-DVD quality 720x410 video playback option. The 720p version of the video requires decent hardware (the 720p video struggles on a Pentium 4 - 1.5GHz), but is the highest quality video (you can even watch it on your HDTV for a real kick!).

With version 2.11, this selection on install becomes a moot point. As of 2.11, you can download the video of your choice via the Launcher interface, and the Launcher will look for the 720p video first, followed by the near-DVD video.

Either way, you will still need to download the appropriate video separately. This was done to keep the installer size to a minimum. Press "Play" on the main menu, and you will be prompted to download the video from the appropriate link. The menu will then walk you through copying the video to your TAW 2.0 folder.

Catalyzed by issues with the original download, TAW has now been re-baselined to 2.15b. All future patches will be based on TAW 2.15b.
